Ol' Henry didn't mind the vet so much... he was a very good boy.
Although his ears bothered him slightly (didn't let anyone futz with them), he was a very happy, energetic puppy.

Visit to the Vet...

So, lately, Henry has been experiencing quite a bit of swelling and poofiness in his ears due to self-inflicted agitation in response to an ear infection. Looks like all of this summer swimming and romping has resulted in a little clogged ear canals and bacterial growths...
This has also resulted in a lot of head-shaking and general discomfort.

I took him to VCA Hospital Brookline. Which, I used to see this animal hospital on the way to work every morning, but I called them, and they were able to fit me in for the afternoon.
My review on their service and whatnot is still pending, but the experience was overall "positive".... they had some troubles examining his ears as they are rather sensitive, but they performed a plucking, a rinsing, and a medical application. Then gave me 3 prescriptions:

A rinsing solution:
Virbac - "Epi-Otic" Advance
Clean both ears every other day for 7-days

An antibiotic:
Mometamax (Gentamicin sulfate, USP)
Apply 3-4 drops to each ear once daily for 10 days.

A pain reliever:
Rimadyl
One tablet, twice daily for 3-5 days

So... that seems rather straightforward.
I gave Henry one of the pain relievers after dinner, and he's zonked out. O.o
poor guy. The ear plucking and solution that they cleaned them with had to have been a little traumatic, but he seemed unaffected by the experience. We made it home and have been chilling ever since.

ever since henry moved in with me, we have lived a harmonious existence with the people and dogs in the neighborhood... henry is a hit with the others at the puppy play groups and at the park..
ironically, the only dog that does not get along with henry lives in the apt upstairs. the +60lb black german shephard has terrorized the superpup since day one.
today was the 6th attack where henry has vocally cried (yelped) and the 4th attack where there was blood drawn. o.o
the dog is so poorly socialized compared to henry and it makes me a little uneasy.

it upsets me to see any animals hurt, but extra so when it's my own.

Henry didn't have too many problems hopping into the water and swimming.
Now that he's been in the water a few times... he started by wading-out to about his chest-depth, then started swimming all his own!

I threw a stick out, and he immediately dove right in.
I was so proud. :)

Gettin' Ready for the Road!

So I have spent the last couple of days getting ready for our camping trip.
I'm extremely excited and so is Henry.

He has been surprisingly tame lately, despite his curiosity and enthusiasm for watching me pack.

I normally have a large quilt draped over his crate... it insulates his safe place and is decorative.
I have decided to use it as a floor covering in the tent. It worked well as a rug when we went to Orb festival last year, and I don't mind if it gets a little dingy. Plus it smells strongly of puppy... which should make Henry feel at ease in the tent.

I packed 3 cups of food (I usually feed him 1.5 cups/day), so for tonight + Saturday (2-meals) + Sunday morning.... and I packed 2x Natural Balance sausage log disks (about .25" thick).. which should serve for a healthy snack and treats. ... as well as a couple of toys for him: a canvas chew ring and a rope-toy (which he has already decapitated).

Should be fun times :)
I think I will keep him tethered for the first couple of hours while I set-up the tent and whatnot.
He did well off-leash after the first day last time, so I hope to do the same process....
Buckle him to my belt for around the site... or tethering him to the water jugs as an anchor.

No, I'm not one of those people who compulsively dresses up their dogs, but I got Henry this raincoat so that he could take pees under bushes without getting drenched. He doesn't mind it terribly....

AND, he looks crazy cute.

The weather has been so hot lately that it's been rough for the ol' pup. We've gone out every day this weekend, and a few steps outside, it is apparent that Henry is made for the cooler climates. His puppy energy, however, keeps him driving on.

Yesterday, we threw the ball around for a bit in the backfield of the Soule Rec Center. The conditions were extremely muggy, albeit the ground was relatively dry. Henry didn't last long before he started scratching at the water bottle more than he was fetching, so I felt it was time to go in. We stayed at home where he was panting for a few hours before passing out.

The mid-afternoon to evening brought a few scattered rain showers, but nothing serious.
And last night around 1:30pm, it was extremely nice and cool.... that same cool air was around this morning at about 10:00, when we went out.

Henry fetched the ball for about 20 minutes with no problems until a man and his small child came into the field. The superpup was immediately distracted and would not return!... ugh.
I have a lot of patience for him, but when he followed them over to the soccer game happening in the adjacent field, I ran to get him... terrified at the possible outcomes. Luckily, he didn't go to the other field. He came back and I rewarded him, but when I went to put him on the leash, he started playing "Hard-to-Get"...

now, this kind of things frustrates me...
i never take it out on him, but I make it very unpleasant for him to evade me.
the sun was coming out in the middle of the sky and Henry insisted on running circles around me instead of heeling. So, being the awful parent that I am, I said, "If you want to run, then run...." and here I go chasing after him.
I jog with a slow pace... keeping him on his feet, he's running circles.
About 20 minutes of this chase ensues, not letting me get within 10 feet of him. And after 30 minutes, he's dead-tired.... but STILL wouldn't let me catch him. There were times you could tell that his little legs were trembling even as he was zig-zagging across the field. Once, he lost his footing and his torso slid about 10 feet before popping back up and continuing his run.

At some point, he gave up. Faced-off in the 3rd field over (yes, i had chased him through 2 fields), he stopped. I held my palm up, and he sat. Panting and wet with dew from the grass of 3 fields. I picked him up, and carried him back. Yes, I was sweating... but i could have gone all day.

When we got home, I wiped him down and filled all of the water dishes in the house with fresh water.... he's panting heavily and his whole body is trembling with exhaustion.
He lapped his fill of water and now he's passed out.

Silly little guy.

Did I do the right thing? Probably not.
But he would not have minded me, and I could not let him just do whatever he wanted with no repercussions. I asserted my dominance by physically overcoming him, and there's not much he could have done after that. I am always wary about letting him off-leash, but in the absence of distractors, he does quite well.

Decisions, decisions...

"Go get it, boy!"

So I think it's funny when Henry has to make these really tough decisions.
Example:

Henry is playing with the red, plush football.
He fetches it consistently, and is rewarded with tons of praise and "good boy"
As he's knoshing on it, I pick up a normal yellow tennis ball to which I say, "Get it, boy".. and toss it through the other room (down the hall).
He darts for it, but is still holding the red football.

When he gets there, he drops the red football to pick up the tennis ball and this is where the dissonance starts. He spends a good 5 minutes picking up the football, by dropping the tennis ball, then picking up the tennis ball, but dropping the football......
Once, he got ambitious and tried picking up both.
I nearly died laughing.

Is this cruel?

Henry and Junie - Part I

So here's Henry and his little girlfriend, Junie... Junie and her owner live just around the corner from us, and whenever we go for a walk, Henry gets EXTREMELY excited when we walk by their front gate. They may not even be home, but if left unattended, he'd sit there waiting for them to come out and play.

It's interesting. Henry is still in-tact so he tends to assert his dominance with pouncing and nips. Junie seems to simply reciprocate the banter... (opposed to other dogs that either become too aggressive or become agitated)... what ensues is a lot of running around, wrestling playfully, and just being cute altogether.

Junie's owner made the comment that they play very well together... so when we see them out on our walks, we are sure to say hello.

Separating them is the hard part.

Lightning & the SuperPup

Last night, there was a crazy lightning storm and I have never seen Henry act so strangely.
I was laying in bed, and he was cuddled up next to me on top of the blankets. It was rather unusual conditions; very humid and warm, the air was a bit turbulent, but just as I was starting to pass-out, there were several consecutive crashes of lightning followed by a flash that lit the whole block-up.
Henry freaked-out a bit and hid under the bed... I couldn't find him, because he had crawled all the way into the back... poor little guy.

I woke this morning to find him still there, shivering.
:(
He was rigid and still freaked-out.

I picked him up and brought him to the window where he saw that it was day-time and wasn't raining anymore. He was okay after that.
He was definitely okay after our walk...

Field Play...

When he's not running around CRAZY, Henry actually does well off leash.

It is a challenge, as he does get very distracted by people passing by.

This is quite possiblymy favorite picture of Henry to date...

It was taken on our last trip to Shawme-Crowell where I, despite a little hesitance, let him off-leash at our site. He immediately ran to the picnic table where he spent the majority of the day chilling-out and knoshing on his toy.

It was a huge relief for me and it was a real affirmation to his obedience. He later expressed his desire to go to the tent, and ended up passing-out long before I got tired.
Henry is a beautiful dog, but can be hard to capture sometimes.

He moves a LOT, and because he's so small, it's hard getting down to his level sometimes.

Because he was on a pedestal that day, it was a bit easier to catch him on camera.

On March 11, I took the turtle (Tuga) out of her terrarium to clean and aerate the soil....

I snapped this shot of Henry,... er.. superpup, completely confused by the "moving rock"

I've already gotten a few comments on this shot.
Since the photo was taken with my cellphone, the quality isn't that good and the selective focus missed a great deal...

Maybe I will get ambitious and recreate the scene.

The Best Dog Treats EVER

So, I have discovered the BEST dog treats.
It's basically a dogfood roll from Natural Balance that I cut into cubes.
Henry responds extremely well to them, and since it is a balanced dogfood, I can feed him up to 1" of the stuff a day and there will be little risk of over-feeding.
Of course, I never do.
Actually, I cut-off about 1/4", then cube it into 25-30 pieces. Which works great for training tips... it's healthier than treats and he is getting a fair diet. --- not to mention cheaper.
Everyone's a winner.
